Senior Controller / Future CFO

Position Summary
Are you an entrepreneurial financial leader ready to step into a future C-suite role? We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented, and dependable Senior Controller to lead financial operations for our privately held commercial real estate portfolio, property management business, and development/investment ventures.
Operating in a fast-paced, owner-operated environment, this pivotal role manages all debt, equity, insurance, and operational risk. You will maintain pristine books and records, oversee property- and entity-level reporting, and optimize cash flow systems. For a proactive leader—preferably a CPA—this position offers a defined, direct path to grow into a full-charge Chief Financial Officer (CFO) within our established, family-run business.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Reporting
Cycle Management: Oversee the complete accounting lifecycle, ensuring efficient internal processes and protocols are developed, documented, and strictly followed.
Executive & Stakeholder Reporting: Direct monthly property-level and corporate-level reporting, including general ledger reviews, error resolution, and proactive communication with owners to support strategic decision-making.
Banking & Treasury: Serve as a primary point of contact for banking relationships, actively managing balances, liquid assets, and corporate/property reserve depository accounts in coordination with ownership.
Tax & Compliance: Lead annual tax package preparation and serve as the main liaison with external CPAs; ensure accurate financial projections, timely entity filings, and voucher payments.
Property Operations & Asset Management
Cash Flow & Capital: Track capital accounts, provide comprehensive cash flow reporting, and manage balance sheet accounting across all properties and entities.
Budgeting & Reconciliations: Partner with the property management team to generate annual budgets, continuously monitor actual vs. budgetary performance, and oversee bank and CAM reconciliations.
Lease & Data Management: Ensure accuracy and management of the internal
Investment Management Database, loan databases, and loan covenants.
Transactional Support: Oversee accounts payable and receivable operations, manage insurance renewals/claims, and handle escrow documentation for real estate acquisitions and dispositions.
Corporate Governance & Efficiency
Entity Management: Manage comprehensive corporate compliance, including Business Tax License registrations, LLC/Corporate Good Standing maintenance, and Annual Statements of Information.
Cost & Efficiency Analysis: Conduct continuous carry cost and construction analyses to identify opportunities to reduce risk, lower costs, and improve operational efficiencies

Qualifications & Experience
Required:
7+ years of commercial real estate accounting experience, with deep expertise handling income-producing assets.
Thorough, practical mastery of NNN, Modified Gross, and Full-Service Gross lease structures.
Expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong familiarity with commercial property management/accounting software (e.g., Skyline, Yardi, MRI, or similar).
Extensive experience in entity management, corporate governance, and federal/state tax compliance workflows.
Strong multitasking skills with a proven ability to manage complex deadlines and multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred:
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation highly preferred.
Prior accounting experience within the Medical Office building sector is a strong plus.
Familiarity with project development and ground-up construction accounting a plus.
